Oil question: after all the oil is gone from a well, what must the oil companies do to the well?

Self-explanatoryOil question: after all the oil is gone from a well, what must the oil companies do to the well?
Cap it, which may or may not mean pumping cement down the hole. More often, (assuming they own the land or have very long term leases, they will simple place a steel cap over the pipe and remove the pump equipment.

It's not unusual for old wells to become active again with new technology, so they don't usually do anything permanent.
