Just off the top of your head, when do you suppose the oil companies stopped putting lead in gasoline?

I know that I could still purchase leaded gasoline when I started driving and it stopped at pretty much the same time, so I would guess it was somewhere around 1989 or 1990.Just off the top of your head, when do you suppose the oil companies stopped putting lead in gasoline?

1976 or 77 I believe it was....
I would guess about 20 years ago because of emissions concerns.
In what year did unleaded fuel become a requirement for all new vehicles?

Answer: Unleaded fuel was brought about in 1974 to prevent the adverse environmental effects of burning gasoline containing tetraethyl lead, an inexpensive octane booster.
in the mid 1980's
It was a series of gradual reductions. In America, the process of reducing lead started in 1975, and ended in 1986, except for a few special uses. All on road use ended in 1996. Some off road use is still permitted, but many racing organizations have banned lead, too.

Other countries had or have different timelines.
When legislation preventing lead additives was enforced.
Phase out of the additive tetraethyl lead began in 1976, and was completed in 1986 for automotive gasoline in the U.S. It was still in use in Europe until 2000, and was finally dropped in China in 2001.

It is still in use for some aviation fuels.

Off the top of my head, 1981 or thereabouts.
They put catalytic converters on cars in 75 so it must of been completely phased out by then. Lead will ruin a cat.
So they could charge us more for NOT putting something in. Lead is an additive.
