Why are oil companies so interested in drilling? What's there for them? Why republicans always represent them?

They are interested in drilling because it their job. Why should they have to come up with an alternative??? I defend their right not to have government take away their profits, if given that power the gov could take anyone's profit. Why are oil companies so interested in drilling? What's there for them? Why republicans always represent them?
They want to drill because they get to keep some of the money that is going to the middle east. That way they can profit from over priced oil. (do you really think they would sell oil to U.S. consumers at a discount rate) The republicans represent them so they can give the oil companies no bid contracts over the new areas they will be able to drill. Then the oil companies give the republicans a ton of money to keep them in power. Everybody wins, except for the U.S. consumer. Why are oil companies so interested in drilling? What's there for them? Why republicans always represent them?
Right now, the only way oil companies know how to make money is to sell oil. They have little interest in developing other energies simply because that kind of development costs a lot of money whereas drilling is known technology and it allows them to continue to do what they know best.

Considering the $12B last quarter, clearly, financially, in the short run, they clearly have the right plan.

I believe its short sighted and may end up with the destruction of man on Earth, but I can see where financially it makes sense.

I hesitate to paint all Republicans with the same paint brush, but Conservatives don't want big government, lots of regulation or taxes. They feel that the free market will inherently do the right thing. That is, if drilling for oil and freeing more hydrocarbons really is the wrong thing for humanity, eventually we'll stop buying it and it will no longer be profitable to sell it.

And so businesses will change to some other more profitable model.

That's great - its called economic Darwinism. Thing is - for Darwinism to work, the MAJORITY of species must fail. There is also nothing to say that humanity will come up with an instance/species/product that will survive in time. I think it is a huge gamble (i.e. you will probably lose) to believe that the market will do the right thing unregulated.
They see the latest ';crisis'; as a good excuse to get rid of those pesky environmental regulations that hurt the bottom line while protecting the quality of life of the American people. If they do start drilling in this country I promise you that this will no longer be an issue that splits people along party lines. Those who live near the proposed oil fields and refineries will oppose them.
Because my party is strongly influenced by socialist tendencies ever since the Socialist Party of America decided to use the Democrats as a platform to achieve what they want that they couldn't under the name, ';Socialist';. This occurred in the 1970s and is a matter of public record (easy to look up in Wikipedia or offline sources).

A strong America is not in their interests.

Republicans look after the interests of business in our country, our economic well-being.

My party protects our freedoms, our rights (when it isn't listening to socialist garbage). We made equality, freedom of expression, free speech household values.

When did looking after our national interests, or economic security, become a BAD thing? What kind of suicidal nonsense is that!?
Ya just Rep's so I guess Nancy Pelosi, Reed, %26amp; Murtha only have shares in Exon to ';keep an eye';on them.

Politicians from both sides have their sticky little fingers in the Oil jar, it's just Dem's are also in the pot with enviormentalists so they have to walk a very fine line not to piss either side off.
Its money that they will make for drilling. Saying that with out them what are were suppose to do. They provide a service that we all need and want.

You like to drive your car ? You like to being warm in the winter ? They do all the work for us. Sure they make a lot of money. Why does the states and feds stop taxing us on gas. They do nothing for it the states and fed makes billions per year.
no offense but the high point of the iraq war for me so far has been the guarenteed lower standard of living my generation will get for it. whoda thought the hippies would ruin thier own childrens lives. so if drilling brings gas cheaper WHILE we devlop clean tech , and i dont mean a fuel ineffecint 10 MPG prius (which is all the electric gets from 35 miles.

the ';eco-concuis'; geo metro of the 1990s got 72 miles per G , or at least my mothers did even though it ran on gas/

More MPG / less gas metro 10 gal tank = driving from seattle , wa to portland , or and back with out a fill.

So you are pretending that some leftist democrats like Reid, Pelosi, etc. haven't had a palm or two greased by an oil company or two?

What's the word for someone like you? Is it ignorant? Naive? Both? Some other word?
Fat (really fat) Union Pension Funds and Harvard's 35 Billion

Endowment are heavy investors in oil companies,

That's fat Democrat contolled unions
Cause we can get oil from our country and reduce our dependence on foreign oil. Isn't that what democrats want
$12Billion profits for Exxon-Mobile last quarter... need I say more?
Uh... do you think that they find that gasoline under every street corner?
