http://online.wsj.com/article/SB12178063鈥?/a>Will Obama impose a ';windfall profits tax'; on Google too, or just rascally oil companies?
If Obama wants to impose a ';windfall profits tax'; for the mere 4% profit they make per gallon sold, then what does he want to do about the 16% profit the government makes from taxes for each gallon sold?
To put it into perspective...from each $4 gallon of gas sold, the oil companies profit $0.16 while the government (between State and Federal) profit $1.60.Will Obama impose a ';windfall profits tax'; on Google too, or just rascally oil companies?
people just don't understand scale. they hear billions of dollars in profits, and they don't understand that the company has a market capitilization of a few hundred billion and millions of owners.
If you added microsoft+berkshire+google+yahoo+mcdonal鈥?together, you would have the largest corporation in the world with never before seen profits. It would be the target for ';windfall profits'; too even though it is owned by tens of millions of people. Split them apart like they are now, they are still getting the same profits. I really don't understand the reasoning.
Just the rascal oil companies. Despite what people may think, if Google folded tomorrow, the world would not cease to exist and our economy would not collapse. With oil, however, it is quite the opposite. The recent oil prices have demonstrated that our entire economy is based on oil. If the oil companies are deliberately using that fact against us, they ought to be punished for taking advantage of their position. No one oil company is a monopoly, but collectively they are acting like one.
The windfall profits tax could affect anyone who owns a large corporation or a small business....if they want to impose a percentage what a company can make...then even the ebay seller could be affected..the IRS has unlimited resources to have the law interpreted to their favor.
I take your point, and it is spot on. I think it's because his campaign likes to demonize middle aged white guys.
